The Legend Of Danau Toba

Once upon a time in the region of Sumatra lived a farmer whose name was Toba. He lived alone in a hut by a small forest. He worked on his farmland. Once day he went to a river and fished there for food today. Arrived at river, he threw the hook into the river and waiting for the hook in the fish meal. He was very surprised when he got a big fish so he went home and put the fish in his kitchen because he planned to cook the fish for his dinner that night. After that he took a bath, when as he walked into his bedroom after taking a bath Toba was very shocked. He saw a very beautiful girl is being mirrored in his room. Then he asked to her, finally her said that her was a fish that he had caught in the river. She was very kind because her gave some gold coins instead as thanking for Toba.

            Toba meant to married her in order to lived together in the house because Toba fell in love with her. The girl married to Toba on one condition that he would never tell anybody about her past. Toba agreed with the promise it. Several months later Toba’s wife pregnant and successfully gave birth to a baby boy, Toba named him Samosir. Soon he grew up into a handsome boy, but Samosir is a lazy boy. He didn’t want to work or just to help his father and mother.

            One day, when Toba worked in the farmland, Samosir just slept. Toba was very disappointed with his son’s nature. He hoped that one day Samosir would change into a diligent boy, but Samosir never changed. Therefore Toba and his wife tried to change his behavior. Usually when Toba worked in the farmland in the morning, his wife always bring food to Toba at midday. But now his wife ordered Samosir to bring food for his father for lunch while her mother stayed at home to do household chores. But Samosir never did his duty well. He always woke up very late. He woke up after midday.

Then one day his mother forced him to bring the food for his father for lunch which was very tired and hungry. But Samosir rejected the request his mother, so his mother very angry to him. Finally, Samosir went to farmland bring the food for his father lunch. But he did not went to the farm immediately. He stopped somewhere in the street and ate the food. It was already late afternoon when he got to the farmland. His father was disappointed. Then he was angry as he realized that his son had eaten his food. He said “you are stupid lazy boy. You are son of a fish”. Samosir  was hurt. He went home right away and as he got home he told his mother about his father’s words.

His mother was shocked. She was also deeply hurt. She told Samosir went to the highest hill. Samosir hurriedly ran to the hill on her purpose. At once the weather turns dark and heavy rains, flooded the village eventually became lakes and Samosir survivors of the disaster. Then it was called Lake Toba and in the middle of the lake there is an island called Samosir Island. Meanwhile Toba’s wife disappeared.
